Our Favorite Activities for Long Road Trips with Children
My kids are about as different as night and day. One is a boy, and one is a girl. One loves being the baby of the family (and sometimes capitalizes on this) while the other is determined to establish their independence and no longer be viewed as the “child” they still appear to be visually. One of my children lives in a whimsical world of make-believe and fairy tales, while the other prefers reality, logic, and cold hard facts.
Needless to say…. this can make choosing activities that appeal to both a bit more difficult these days. This is even truer when you add in a confined space and long hours on the road! Trying to plan activities to keep these two entertained on a road-trip may sound like a total nightmare, but it’s really not that bad at all! Especially with the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse!
This vehicle is like a dream come true for my diverse family. Not only is it super spacious and comfy enough for the whole family (including the driver) to feel great the entire trip…. It comes packed with available technology I need to keep everyone happy until we reach our destination!
How do I do it?
First, I provide options. I’ve learned that if I invite my son (and husband) to join in on the sing-along songs that my daughter and I love to blast on our favorite radio station…. I’ll likely receive more than a few irritated side-glances. If I, instead, leave them to their tablets and headphones while she and I enjoy ourselves…. I find they can’t help but to put their headphones aside and join by the end of the song!
Choose Family Friendly Podcasts
I make sure to choose a few family friendly podcast stations and have them queued up before we even role out of the driveway. Not only is this something everyone can enjoy… we often get the chance to discuss them and bond along the way!
Take Advantage of Technology
Most moms have those handy go-to playlists that you use to entertain your children when you’re stuck waiting somewhere, and need to keep them occupied. Riding in the car shouldn’t be any different! The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse offers available MyLink,(1) so I can connect my smartphone with the car via Bluetooth(2)or USB(3). This lets me access some of my apps and stream music and playlists right from my phone while we’re on the road!
The car ride is usually a big part of any road trip, and can make or break your family’s vacation experience. Doing a little planning before you hit the road can ensure you all have the greatest time possible!
