What You May Not Know About Skype

How do you communicate with loved ones and co workers that can’t be near you?

Last month I shared with you some exciting news about becoming a Skype ambassador. Over the course of a month I have been using Skype in my day to day activities, learning about the latest features, and have found a great connection that has naturally turned Skype into a very valuable communication tool for me.skype video calling

Meet Chantal Smile You all know her as my cloth diaper expert here on Mommy of Two Little Monkeys.

Chantal lives in Texas and I live in Missouri. While we are just a few states apart, communication can be hard to do when using email and text messages. We got together on a few occasions using Skype to talk about our latest features on Mommy of Two Little Monkeys, she wanted to show me some of the products just received in the mail for review, and of course our little ones just wanted to say hello.

We have both found that by using Skype it has helped to bring us together on the same page. It’s great to see Chantal on video, the Skype experience really makes you feel like the other person is right there and made working together so much easier.

With Skype’s free basic features you can communicate via video chat, voice calling, or even with instant messaging.

To video chat with another person there are 3 things you need:

  • Webcam
  • Microphone
  • Internet Connection

For Voice Calling (Skype to Skype) you will need 2 things:

  • Microphone
  • Internet Connection

I’ve really enjoyed the instant messaging feature and love that you can do it as a 1 on 1 basis, or even as a group chat. Several times this has been our “go to” method when other instant messaging programs were having technical difficulties. I was happy to see that Skype’s instant messaging feature was stable and kept us connected.

I used to think Skype was only video. Had NO idea that you could do so many other things with the Skype service!

My husband is preparing for a trip to Europe, exciting right? Well it is exciting, with the exception that our cell phone company will be charging us $2+ a MINUTE for my husband to call me, or for me to call him, while he is in Europe.

Yes, I said two dollars + a minute!

I was excited to learn that my husband will be able to connect to our family with Skype while he is away. By using Skype video chat we will not only be able to hear his voice, but our children will be able to see daddy.

Did I mention that we can do this for free?!

Skype also offers some new premium features that I will be trying out over the next couple of weeks.

  • Group Video Chats
  • Group Screen Sharing
  • SMS Text Messages

Stay tuned! I am planning a fun event to share with you using these features from Skype..

See more about the new Skype features and
download the software for free on the Skype website.

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Skype. I received Skype credits to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for participating.

I started using Skype last year to keep in touch with my college friends, and I love it. We’re scattered all across the country, and other countries in some cases, and it’s so nice to have an inexpensive (free!) way to keep in touch. And it’s better than talking on the phone, because you can see the other person.
